After going both ways for the latter portion of the 2013 season, Kevin Pope will get the opportunity for a repeat in 2014.

SMU announced in a press release that the running back/linebacker “has been granted a medical hardship waiver by the American Athletic Conference and will return to the field in 2014.” Pope played in just one game in 2010 before an injury that originated in high school not only sidelined him for the remainder of that season but for all of 2011 as well.

Lacrosse player Chris Hipps, NFL.com‘s Gil Brandt is reporting, is set to transfer from Duke to SMU, where he will join the Mustangs football team. The move comes two days after Hipps helped lead the Blue Devils to its second consecutive national lacrosse championship.

Because Hipps will be a graduate transfer, he’ll be eligible to play immediately for the Mustangs in 2014 in what will be his final season of NCAA eligibility.

At least at the highs school level, Hipps showed he had the potential to possibly help the Mustangs as he caught 86 passes for 1,580 yards and 18 touchdowns as a senior at Highland Park (Tex.) High School.

The Mustangs announced Friday that they’ve added transfers Matt Davis and Cameron Nwosu to the football roster. Both are expected to be eligible to play immediately in 2014, the school stated.

Davis, a quarterback, comes to SMU from Texas A&M by way of the JUCO ranks. A four-star member of the Aggies’ 2012 recruiting class, Davis was listed as the No. 3 dual-threat quarterback in the country and the No. 15 player at any position in the state of Texas. He redshirted as a true freshman his only season in College Station as he transferred in August of 2013.

Beginning in 2014, Davis will have three years of eligibility remaining and will compete immediately for the opportunity to replace Garrett Gilbert under center for the Mustangs.

In Nwosu, the Mustangs are getting a very experience linebacker coming off a knee injury that cost him the entire 2013 season. During his time at Rice, Nwosu started 25 consecutive games prior to the injury. He finished second on the team with 92 tackles in 2012.

Nwosu graduated from Rice, making him immediately eligible.

Scout.com reported earlier this week that wide receiver Arrius Holleman and running back Rishaad Wimbley have decided to leave the Mustangs. Shortly after that report surfaced, it was reported that another wide receiver, J’Marcus Rhodes, was exiting the football building as well.

June Jones announced that Neal Burcham has been tapped as SMU’s starting quarterback. The Mustangs’ quarterback competition technically involved multiple players, but it essentially came down to Burcham and Texas A&M transfer Matt Davis.
