The post-spring attrition across college football continues into the Memorial Day weekend, with Miami the latest to lose some depth on its roster ahead of the start of summer camp.

By way of the Sun Sentinel, the Hurricanes have confirmed that fullback C.J. Holton and tight end Billy Sanders are no longer members of the Hurricanes’ football team. No specific reason was given for either departure.

At least for the time being, it doesn’t appear transfers are the motivation as both players will remain in school.

Holton is the most noteworthy of the two departures as the redshirt senior began the spring No. 2 on the depth chart and moved up to the starting spot thanks to an injury to Maurice Hagans. An ankle injury during a scrimmage ended his spring prematurely, however. It’s unclear if that injury played a role in his decision.

The redshirt senior played in 16 games the past two seasons, including three last year.

Miami kicked senior safety Ray-Ray Armstrong off the football team Wednesday, and said it would give him a full release should he decide to transfer.

Miami DE no longer with team

Miami defensive end Kelvin Cain played in seven games this season for the Hurricanes. He will not, however, finish out the year. A university spokesperson confirmed to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel that Cain, a member of UM’s 2010 recruiting class, was no longer with the program.

No reason was given for the departure, but Cain’s name had been removed from the online roster. There’s also the possibility that Cain was shown the door, although that has not been confirmed. Cain has been in Al Golden‘s doghouse before, most recently as this last spring when he was suspended for a brief time during spring practices for an unspecified violation of team rules

A school spokesperson confirmed to the Palm Beach Post that linebacker Gionni Paul is no longer a part of the football program. Whether Paul was given the boot or left of his own volition is unknown as the school declined to give the nature of the departure.

Senior tight end Cory White, who has already graduated, has been removed. He's finished with his college career and won't be on the 2013 team. White spent his entire career dealing with injuries.
Junior linebacker Gionni Paul has been removed. He announced two weeks ago that he would not be playing for the Hurricanes in 2013. It seems like a mutual decision was made to determine that. He was a reserve linebacker in 2012, but did make a couple starts.

Junior cornerback Thomas Finnie was arrested recently, and has been removed from the roster. He was a part-time starter but is now officially off the team.

There are 14 players listed as redshirt freshmen, which means they were granted redshirts for the 2012 season. Those players are QB Gray Crow, QB Preston Dewey, QB David Thompson, RB Danny Dillard, WR Jontavious Carter, WR D'Mauri Jones, OL Taylor Gadbois, OL Danny Isidora, DL Jacoby Briscoe, DL Jake O'Donnell, LB Jawand Blue, CB Nate Dortch, and CB Larry Hope.
