Ole Miss News

Post by GoAztecs on Wed Jul 06, 2011 1:51 pm

On Tuesday, Tobias Singleton confirmed to The Clarion Ledger that he had enrolled at Ole Miss. On Wednesday, he started summer school, a team spokesman confirmed to ESPN.com.

The NCAA Clearinghouse reviewed Singleton’s high school transcript after his ACT score increased from a 16 to a 24. The Clearinghouse is accustomed to reviewing such high jumps in scores, so it came as no surprise when Singleton was flagged.

Getting Singleton on campus and ready to compete this summer is pretty big news for the Rebels. Singleton, who ESPN Recruiting ranked as the No. 21 receiver in the country and the No. 128 player overall in the 2011 recruiting class, finished his senior season at Madison (Miss.) Madison Central with more that 1,800 yards of total offense and 19 touchdowns.

With the Rebels short on proven playmakers at wide receiver, the 6-foot-1, 190-pounder is expected to compete immediately for playing time.

Singleton not only possesses quality speed, but he's extremely elusive in the open field. He's someone Ole Miss' coaches are hoping they can use early in the Rebels' offense.

Grandy will not be on Ole Miss

This time we mean it. Like, for real real.

Because, if you’ll recall, Ole Miss receiver Jesse Grandy left the program in Feburary due to a reported illness in the family.

Then, after a four-month hiatus, Grandy returned to Oxford to enroll in summer classes and it appeared the sophomore was back on track to rejoining the team.

However, and for reasons that, again, appear to point toward family issues, Grandy will not be joining the Rebels this fall.

Freshmen to get shot at playing time

Post by Palo20 on Mon Jul 18, 2011 2:06 pm

With the attrition at defensive back, linebacker, and wide receiver, Ole Miss head coach Houston Nutt has said that incoming freshmen like "(Senquez) Golson, Cody Prewitt, Aaron Morris, Justin Bell, Tobias Singleton, Nick Brassell, Donte Moncrief and many more are going to be given a real shot."

With Barry Brunetti most likely the starter at quarterback, the connection that he builds with these talented freshmen could pay huge dividends for years to come. Defensively, these youngsters will take their lumps but they will be all the better for it as upperclassmen.

After his arrest for disorderly conduct, Ole Miss quarterback Randall Mackey has been suspended for the season opener while head coach Houston Nutt has tabbed Barry Brunetti as the starter against BYU.

Brunetti could give the Rebels some continuity at quarterback for years to come but as he comes along, he will need to lean on star running back Brandon Bolden.

Updated Depth Chart

Post by FuriousCalm on Thu Sep 01, 2011 8:42 pm

From: http://blogs.clarionledger.com/um/2011/08/31/ole-miss-releases-depth-chart-with-traditional-4-3-formation/

OXFORD — It appears that the spur position is out of Ole Miss’ starting defense in favor of a weakside linebacker.

In an updated depth chart released Wednesday by the school, spur Aaron Garbutt was listed at second-team free safety (in an “or” situation with Brishen Matthews) and Joel Kight was weakside linebacker.

Mike Marry will be in the middle and Ralph Williams on the strongside. All three have missed time in fall camp due to injuries.

“We’re just trying to do what our guys do best,” coach Houston Nutt said. “Trying to get the best guys on the field.”

Defensive coordinator Tyrone Nix said the move was about improving against the run.

“They’re the most experienced guys and we feel like those guys give us the best chance to stop the run,” Nix said.
An updated defensive depth chart was released 9/1/2011 changing from 4-2-5 to base 4-3 defense:

I don't know if this factors into what you do, but D.T. Shackleford will miss the 2012 season.

OLE MISS
Nice work and thanks. Ole Miss has shuffled some players around, but as of 8/23/12...

Position changes:
Overall Source: http://blogs.clarionledger.com/um/category/football/
Randall Mackey has been moved to HB from WR/QB
E.J. Epperson has been moved to DE from backup FB
Ivan Nicholas listed at LB weight 234 currently, should be a DB (FS?) weight 201. http://www.olemisssports.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/nicholas_ivan00.html

New Players:
DT Isaac Gross (Freshman 6'3" 270 Batesville, MS --suggest replacing Carlton Martin if needed) source: http://www.clarionledger.com/article/20120819/SPORTS030103/208190336/Ole-Miss-DT-Gross-bucking-odds

HB Jaylen Walton (Freshman 5'8 164 Memphis, TN -- suggest replacing DLyle Washington)
http://www.olemisssports.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/walton_jaylen00.html

DB (CB?) Louis Covington (JC-Junior 5'10" 185 Baton Rouge, LA -- suggest replacing CB Anthony Standifer)

HB Depth Chart Changes (flexible):

1. Randall Mackey (needs rushing ratings adjustment since he moved from QB/WR to HB, in my opinion Mackey's overall rating should be at least comparable to Jeff Scott at 83 since he's replaced Scott when he went down with injury briefly. Suggest upping his: BTK, ELU, BCV, SFA, SPM, JKM, CAR, etc.)
2. Jeff Scott
3. I'tavius Mathers
4. Jaylen Walton
5. Nick Parker
6. Devin Thomas

Ole Miss picks up transfer QB

Granted his release from Southern Miss in December, quarterback Anthony Alford has apparently found his new collegiate destination.

Via his Twitter account, Alford indicated that he will head to Ole Miss, although that has not yet been confirmed by the school.
