SEC Expansion? Empty SEC Expansion?

Post by volstopfan14 Fri Aug 12, 2011 6:51 pm

Any thoughts on the SEC possibly expanding to 14 teams? It sounds like Texas A&M is coming and it could be official before the end of the month. Florida State is reportedly the top choice for the 14th team. Oklahoma, Missouri, Clemson, Georgia Tech, NC State, and Virginia Tech are other schools I've heard mentioned. Oklahoma would be the most likely target or those schools but they would likely not leave without Oklahoma St and the SEC likely won't take both.

As for the Big 12, I could see 1 of 2 things happening. Either Texas would go independent and the conference would die, or Houston would be added to replace A&M.

In my opinion, the best option for a 14th school is Missouri or Virginia Tech. I don't think FSU will come and I don't think Clemson, Ga Tech or any other ACC school is worth it. Florida State should own the ACC in the near future. Jimbo is pulling in top recruits and they are on the rise. I don't know why they would leave and take on a much tougher schedule. You could say it would help in recruiting but its not like they are struggling to recruit good players now.

SEC Expansion? Empty Re: SEC Expansion?

My honest opinion is I am not in favor of these super conferences and enjoy the different smaller conferences and match ups of the bigger conferences. It is going to get to the point that we narrow all of college football down to 4 or 5 conferences.

SEC Expansion? Empty Re: SEC Expansion?

I'm not sure if I want it to happen or not. I'm not opposed to A&M, but I'd just assume the SEC stays as it is right now. The SEC is by far the best conference right now. Unless the Big Ten or Pac-12 makes a move to challenge that, I'd keep the 12 we have now.

Here's another thing that I've been thinking about that could be a problem. Lets say A&M joins the SEC and the Big 12 adds Houston. Then Florida State says no and stays in the ACC. Who does the SEC add? It seems like they would want to go east but who is left that is a solid option? Georgia Tech left the league years ago and might not want to come back. Miami and Clemson are not the top school in their states and don't add a TV market. UNC is under NCAA investigation and will not go anywhere without Duke. Virginia Tech is a possibilty but I don't know if there is any interest from either side. The last thing I want is the SEC at 13 teams, but that seems like it could be a solid possibility. I'm not saying that will happen, I just think it is a possibility that some have overlooked.

I feel the same way. I think it is really a bad idea because it will continue to shrink the Big 12 down to nothing. While growing an unstoppable conference - this is from someone that loves SEC football but ultimately thinks that it would create a gigantic problem a few years from now. I have heard also that Louisville might try to get a bid into the SEC - I think it was even on ESPN a while back.

I also feel the same way about TCU. I love TCU in the MAC, especially the Boise State rivalry. Now with TCU going to the Big East next year its just going to take some of the fun out of the whole conference thing. If this is the case and they are going to keep subdividing and changing and bouncing conferences back in fourth, then the logical thing to do would be to make one or two big conferences and make it like the NFL have two conference and two divisions per conference and let them go at it. It would solve the whole complaining and crying about not getting a title shot because of the non-automatic qualifer conference. It would level everyone one the same level - assuming everyone recruited the same way and had a level playing field.

I just can't see any logic in making a super conference. Now we are in this almost dynasty like state with the SEC and PAC 12 (and a few years from now that might be the case with the Big Ten - if they keep growing), don't get me wrong, I love the SEC (especially Alabama and Arkansas) but it just getting to be too much.

If the SEC keeps expanding and likewise the Big Ten expands - I have heard rumors that they are going to expand again in 2013-2014, don't know if there is any truth to that but on one of the local radio shows that I listen to, they mentioned the fact that Pitt and or (somebody else - I can't remember - might have been Boise State but I could be wrong). The guys on the show were throwing that out there and one of them apparently had heard the rumor.

I don't know what is going to happen but I don't like it, call me old fashioned or an old man but I don't like change, somethings are better left untouched because once you change it just goes down from there (example look at the Big 12 the past few years now Oklahoma really has no competition besides Mizzou, OS, Texas). So now you have four teams in an automatic qualifing conference that willl continue to go down because its the strength of schedule and wins that get you to a national title and when the SEC and PAC 12 plays ranked teams nearly every week it just kind of take the wind out of the Big 12 Sail.

But hey, that just my .02..............
