Standard loses backup RB to baseball

Stanford running back Tyler Gaffney has made a choice when it comes to his athletic future.

Gaffney, a two-sport athlete for the Cardinal, was drafted in the 24th round by the Pittsburgh Pirates for the 2012 MLB draft. Late last week, the would-be senior running back had this to say on his Twitter account:

“Stanford has been amazing. I can’t say enough. Brotherhood on each team. But Im going to pursue a dream. I CANT pass this up. Pirates baby.”

In a statement released through the school Monday evening, Gaffney confirmed that he would be foregoing his final season of eligibility in order to pursue a career in professional baseball.

Nunes selected the starter

Josh Nunes will step into Andrew Luck's very big shoes for Stanford.

Nunes, a 6-foot-4, 225-pound redshirt junior, was announced as the winner of Stanford's quarterback competition on Tuesday. He beat out redshirt sophomore Brett Nottingham, who began spring practices as the favorite to win the job, and redshirt freshman Kevin Hogan.

Stanford football coach David Shaw has announced that junior quarterback Brett Nottingham plans to transfer.

Shaw said during practice Saturday that Nottingham would be leaving the eighth-ranked Cardinal (11-2), who won the Pac-12 title and will play Big Ten champion Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1.

Nottingham was a highly touted recruit who was the primary backup last season to Andrew Luck, this year's No. 1 pick in the NFL draft who is now playing for the Indianapolis Colts. Nottingham was beaten out for the starting job during preseason practice by Josh Nunes.

In two games this season, he completed 5 of 8 passes for 22 yards. He played in six games during 2011 and completed 5 of 8 passes for 78 yards and a touchdown. He was among the top quarterback prospects in the nation out of Monte Vista High School in nearby Danville.
