Tulsa loses backup QB

After exiting spring practice as the No. 2 quarterback depth chart, Shavodrick Beaver is no longer a member of Tulsa’s football team, the school announced Wednesday.

In their press release, it was revealed that Beaver would’ve been forced to sit out the 2011 season as an academic redshirt. Instead, the junior has decided to transfer to the JUCO level to continue his collegiate career.

When Tulsa takes to the field to begin Bill Blankenship‘s second season as the Golden Hurricanes’ head coach, they’ll do so without the services of one of their top returning players on the defensive side of the ball.

And, as it turns out, two more after that for good measure.

Thanks to a violation of, of course, unspecified team rules, Tulsa announced Tuesday that linebacker Shawn Jackson (pictured, right) has been suspended for the first three games of the 2012 season. Because of the suspension, the junior will be unavailable for non-conference games versus Iowa State (road) and Nicholls State (home) and the Conference USA opener against Tulane in Tulsa.

bad injury

Over the weekend, Tulsa head coach Bill Blankenship sounded decidedly pessimistic when it came to a knee injury suffered by Bryan Burnham, describing it as “heartbreaking” and “significant” while stopping short of declaring it season-ending.

Unfortunately, that’s exactly what it’s turned out to be.

In a release, Tulsa confirmed that an MRI confirmed that the wide receiver had suffered a torn ACL. As a result, Burnham will miss the remainder of the 2012 season.

He will undergo surgery at some point in the near future to repair the damage suffered in the third quarter of Saturday’s 38-23 loss to Iowa State.

Burnham led the Golden Hurricane in receptions (nine) and receiving yards (90) in the opener despite going down in the third quarter with the injury. As a junior last season, he accounted for 54 receptions for 850 yards and nine touchdowns.
