defensive end Jeremy Gainer is expected to transfer from the Spartans and continue his playing career elsewhere. Gainer has not participated in any of the spring practice sessions thus far and, obviously, will not play in Saturday’s spring game.

The Spartans announced Monday that wide receiver Kyle Kerrick has asked for and been granted a release from his MSU scholarship. No reason for the departure was given, although the fact that the redshirt freshman was buried fifth on the Spartans’ most recent depth chart likely played a significant role in the departure.

After a solid spring game in which he caught a touchdown pass, Michigan State wide receiver A.J. Troup appeared to be an emerging contributor for the Spartans’ offense.

That won’t be the case after all. Troup tweeted Tuesday that he’s undergoing knee surgery and an associate athletic director confirmed to Mlive.com that the surgery will cost Troup the 2013 season.
