Re: Looks like EA has the standing 8 count
Last year of the BCS, last year of NCAA Football. There may be football gods after all.
Anywho, the easiest solution was and remains for EA to just release the game engine itself for $30 or $40, call it EA Sports Football Simulator, allow teams/players/stadiums/leagues to be customized to all hell, and then allow the community to share the files.
They don't have to buy a single license, and there is absolutely no basis for a lawsuit. Let the assholes trying to sell their custom files deal with the lawyers.

Bill Walsh is what started it...but we can't go backwards now...I love the idea of a completely customizable game engine
Re: Looks like EA has the standing 8 count
Sad day for NCAA football, glad I am taking my time doing my own roster because this game won't be the same in the future.

And of course, it's the fans that take it right on the scrotum. Thanks for all your support! But now the 'important people' have to pay their lawyers. Gay

Re: Looks like EA has the standing 8 count
It's tough...because I have love for this game...but I also feel that the NCAA has reaped the benefits from these non-professional athletes for far too long...everyone seems to lose in this shitty situation
Re: Looks like EA has the standing 8 count
I'm really torn here. It's gotta be rough being the college athlete knowing that your play is filling the pockets of the school and the NCAA. Having to make the grades, devote numerous hours to all the practices, and perform to continue your scholarship. Not to mention, depending on the type of scholarship, paying your way through the offseason. However, getting a degree from a prestigious school and saving about $120k sounds rough too. The NCAA/school/team should have the players sign waivers. They have waivers for everything else. Why not for likeness? It's as easy as "you don't sign the likeness waiver, you don't compete." You don't compete, you better major in something other than Underwater Basket Weaving. I don't know... Leave it to a few members that got p***ed off because they couldn't make it to the big time and got stuck being fry chef somewhere. Congratulations, neither could the rest of us. But good luck on your student loans! All the while, we the fans get screwed, and the lawyers and "big business" reap the benefits. All this trouble, just to have EA do a crappy job with the rosters year in and year out!!! Maybe all of this will persuade Luv into coming out of retirement one last time???

Re: Looks like EA has the standing 8 count
I'm not one to feel sorry the student-athletes when it comes to the NCAA big wigs, and rich people profiting off the players. A bunch of people seem to think that players should get a stipend, which I think is silly. I would kill to be a scholarship player in any sport. They get free housing, free meals, free wardrobe, free tuition, free books, nice hotels, and get to travel. They do struggle during the summer time, but they can apply and receive Pell Grants, which is free government money, that should be more than enough to get them through the summer break.
I'm of the unabated, capitalists, moneybags, approach when it comes to athletes getting paid. If a player wants to sign an endorsement deal with anyone, they should reap the benefits without any penalty. It should be up to the player to whether or not they want to share the money with the school. If EA wants to give DJ Foster $100,000 for being on the cover of their next game, Foster should be able to take the money without penalty. He shouldn't have to share it with the swim team or the rifle team. If Johnny Football wants to sell his autograph for $50 a pop, he should, and not be penalized.
The whole "money in college athletics" saga is way deeper and more complicated than it seems. In my opinion, universities (especially mine here at ASU) is one big marketing machine that is milking the taxpayers, and providing the already rich elite with cheap, indebted labor, so they can exploit and suppress for generations to come......but I'll save that rant for another day.
Fuck you NCAA!

Zoon, I personally couldn't agree with you more. Let Nike take a marketing gamble on Johnny Football and see what happens long term. However, how does the term "amateur athlete" tie into this? Once you get an endorsement of any sort, you're no longer an amateur.
I do agree that the NCAA and the schools get more than their dues. It's the American way to profit off of the working class and the ignorant. I'm not saying that is the way that it should be but it is what it is. Screw the school and screw the NCAA.

The term "amateur athlete" went out the door once the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA...a tax exempt, nonprofit organization), became a billion-dollar television contract empire. They shouldn't be called "amateur athletes", they should be called "indentured servants", like the rest of us.trailerpark007 wrote:However, how does the term "amateur athlete" tie into this? Nah--it's from Numb/Encore by Jay-Z and Linkin Park. It's a good song, but most people probably know it from the opening of the movie Miami Vice.zoon wrote:is this a haiku?jd@os wrote:

I think it fits Luv perfectly. One, with this possibly being the last NCAA Football game as we know it now, and two, with the reviews for it being better than in years' past, a lot of people probably want Luv to come back for an encore--like Jordan. He said last year would be his last, and it looks like he wasn't kidding. I wasn't kidding either--I didn't get the game this year only because Luv wasn't doing the rosters. My wife said we should get it just in case it becomes a collector's item for possibly being the last game (like College Hoops 2K8), but for me, No Luv, no game.
