Auburn 2014 news

Post by GoAztecs on Mon Jan 13, 2014 2:36 pm

Auburn coach Gus Malzahn confirmed that S Kiehl Frazier will transfer from the school.

The former quarterback wants to return to his old position at another school after switching to safety last offseason. Frazier will reportedly transfer to Ouachita Baptist, a Division II school in Arkansas. "He's always been nothing but a winner with his attitude," Malzahn said. "We've talked through the year. He just felt like at this time that he wanted to go somewhere and play quarterback. We wish him nothing but the best. He'll do well." The former four-star QB recruit will join his brother Jed Beach, an offensive lineman, at OBU.

Offensive lineman Austin Golson is transferring from Ole Miss to walk on at Auburn.

Golson, a four-star member of Ole Miss’ heralded 2013 recruiting class, decided to leave Ole Miss in April to be closer to his sick grandparents. For the native of Prattville, Ala., Auburn — about an hour’s drive away — made the most sense. Golson will be eligible to play for Auburn in 2015, but will have to pay his way through school in 2014.

As a freshman with Ole Miss, Golson played 12 games as a reserve at right guard in 2013 and very well could’ve started at right tackle in Oxford this fall. Rated as the No. 8 tackle and No. 118 overall player in the recruiting class of 2013, Golson should provide a nice boost to Auburn’s offensive line in a year and a half.

A couple of months after becoming entrenched in it, it looks as if Anthony Swain has made his way out of Gus Malzahn‘s doghouse.

The Auburn head coach confirmed Wednesday that the linebacker has been reinstated to the team. Swain did not practice at all with the team during spring practice earlier this offseason for unspecified, non-injury issues.

Ex-UGA DB Tray Matthews tweets he’s headed to Auburn

As it turns out, the SEC hasn’t seen the last of Tray Matthews.

In the same tweet that he announced he was leaving Georgia, the defensive back stated that “Auburn or Louisville will be my new home.” In another tweet posted to his Twitter account early Saturday afternoon, Matthews revealed he would be moving over to the SEC West and continuing his collegiate playing career on The Plains with the Tigers.

To satisfy NCAA transfer rules, Matthews will be forced to sit out the 2014 season. He will have three years of eligibility remaining beginning in 2014.

After leaving Ole Miss in mid-April, Austin Golson decided to become a walk-on at Auburn nearly a month later. Because of sick grandparents, the offensive lineman appealed for a hardship waiver that would grant him immediate eligibility for 2014.

Unfortunately for the player, that appeal the move was unsuccessful.

AU line coach B.J. Grimes confirmed Monday night that Golson’s appeal to the NCAA was unsuccessful. No reason was given for the denial.

Golson will take a redshirt for the 2014 season, then have three seasons of eligibility remaining beginning in 2015.

After discussing his starting quarterback situation while also confirming the worst when it comes to one of his top returning defensive linemen, Gus Malzahn revealed that two Tigers — wide receiver Jaylon Denson and linebacker Justin Garrett — have been granted medical hardship waivers by the NCAA. The ruling means that each player, both juniors, will get back one year of eligibility.

Auburn opened camp on Friday and is already down one starting offensive lineman for the 2014 season. Head coach Gus Malzahn told reporters on Friday offensive guard Alex Kozan will miss the entire 2014 season due to a back injury suffered over the offseason.
