Ole Miss 2014 news

Post by GoAztecs on Thu Jan 16, 2014 1:51 pm

Ole Miss defensive tackle and linebacker combo D.T. Shackelford has received good word from the NCAA. Shackelford applied for a rare sixth year of eligibility for the 2014 season and received approval Saturday. Ole Miss announced the decision Saturday via email.

Tee Shepard had this to say about committing to continue his FBS football career at Mississippi State.

“I told them I’m a Dawg,” Shepard told Rivals.com. “They’re all excited. The players, the coaches and everybody are just excited. It’s crazy. The coaches were telling me all week about the same two things: football and academics. That’s what I’m happy about. Everybody is just excited right now.”

Three days later?  Yeah, not so much.

In an abrupt turnaround, Bulldogs’ in-state rival Ole Miss announced the JUCO cornerback as part of its 2014 recruiting class Wednesday.  Why Shepard switched his commitment from the Bulldogs to the Rebels on signing day is unclear at this point.

Defensive end C.J. Johnson and guard Aaron Morris, starters on both sides Ole Miss’ lines, will see their collegiate playing careers extended out another season, the Rebels announced Wednesday.

Both players were granted medical hardship waivers by the NCAA recently, meaning another season of eligibility has been tacked on beyond 2014.

Here are, per Freeze's presser, the position changes we should expect to see this spring:

•Wide receiver Laquon Treadwell will move to the outside, while Quincy Adeboyejo will move to Treadwell's old spot in the slot.
•Quintavius Burdette will move to receiver from defensive back.
•Austin Golson will move from right guard to right tackle (but will be limited this spring due to an offseason shoulder surgery).
•Defensive end Channing Ward will get some reps at tight end.
•Chief Brown will move from safety to the hybrid safety/linebacker "Husky" position.
•Jeremy Liggins will see time at both tight end and quarterback this spring.
•Kailo Moore will move from halfback to field corner.
•Carlton Martin will move from defensive tackle to offensive guard.
•Guard Justin Bell and tackle Robert Conyers will both get looks at center.
•Bobby Hill is no longer on the Rebel football team (this counts as a position change, right?)

Head coach Hugh Freeze confirmed to multiple media outlets that CB Chief Brown suffered a torn Achilles tendon during a recent workout. It’s unclear how exactly the player suffered the tear.

It’s expected that Brown will miss the entire 2014 season as the rehab for such an injury would be, at minimum, six months and could stretch out to eight months and beyond.

It appeared as though Nebraska was ready to welcome wide receiver Damore’ea Stringfellow this season, but a recent recruiting trip to the SEC called an audible. Stringfellow let the world know on Twitter he is now heading to Ole Miss to join the Rebels. Stringfellow is a transfer from Washington.

Due to NCAA transfer rules, Stringfellow will not be eligible to play for Ole Miss until 2015. When he does become eligible though, he will have three years of eligibility remaining.

The roller coaster ride that is Tee Shepard continued down the tracks Thursday, with the talented defensive back receiving some good news on the qualifying front.

Citing an Ole Miss spokesperson, the Jackson Clarion-Ledger reported overnight that Shepard has been cleared academically and will be a part of the Rebels football team in 2014. Because he played at a level below the FBS in 2013, Shepard will be permitted to play this season and have three years of eligibility remaining.
