Lost a 2011 signee to transfer at LB

In a statement, head coach Paul Rhoads confirmed that linebacker Donald Smith has decided to transfer before ever playing a down for the football program.

“Donald came to me and was very homesick,” Rhoads said. “He wanted to go and play somewhere closer to home. We wish him all the best.”

Donald, who went to high school in Riverview, Fla., has already decided on his next collegiate home – Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach, Fla. He will be eligible to play immediately as he’s transferring to a lower level.

Missouri freshman defensive tackle Gerrand Johnson, who left the team, will transfer to Louisiana-Monroe to play near his hometown of Rayville, LA.

Gary Pinkel confirmed that Johnson had left the squad after missing two days of practice in a row. The addition of Sheldon Richardson buried Johnson even deeper on the depth chart and may have contributed to the transfer.

Head coach Paul Rhoades announced yesterday that Steele Jantz has won the starting job following a camp-long battle with Jerome Tiller and Jared Barnett. Based on his experience at the Div. 1-A level, it was believed Tiller may have had the inside track on the job. The QB, however, was ruled academically ineligible, effectively handing the job to Steele.

Exiting spring practice, Ben Durbin was listed as a starting defensive lineman on Wyoming’s depth chart.

Entering summer camp? He’ll be in line for a starting job — in his home state of Iowa.

According to a release from Iowa State, Durbin has decided to transfer from the Cowboys and play his final season of college football with the Cyclones. As Durbin has already graduated from his now-previous school with a degree in psychology, he will be allowed per NCAA transfer rules to play immediately in 2012.

Durbin said he grew up as an ISU fan — but wasn’t offered a scholarship by the Cyclones coming out of high school — and is looking forward to fulfilling what appears to be a lifelong dream.

“I wanted to play for the Cyclone Nation,” Durbin said in a statement. “I can play in front of my family. This is God’s Country to me and I have always been an Iowa State fan.”

In 2011, Durbin started eight games for the Cowboys at defensive tackle. He played in all 12 games the previous season.

Two leave Iowa State

After losing out on the starting quarterback job in August, Jared Barnett has decided to take his leave of the Iowa State football program.

Head coach Paul Rhoads announced Friday that Barnett and linebacker C.J. Morgan have decided to leave the Cyclones to continue their playing careers elsewhere. There’s no word on where either will transfer, although Rhoads alluded to family issues that will likely send Morgan closer to his hometown of Frostproof, Fla.
