WR #84 Marquise Goodwin will sit out the year to pursue the Olympics. Will redshirt and plans to play in 2012.
I believe LOLB#53 is Steve Edmond although he is listed at 245 according to rivals.
ROLB#33 is Jordan Hicks. Wears #3.

Dom Jones is the starter at TE however his status is in limbo. Lot of rumblings that he may be gone, he hasn't been with the team all summer.

If you are creating a player add TE MJ McFarland to the roster. 6-6 240 lbs TE from El Paso, TX. Should be in the mix for playing time, he was on campus during the spring.

Texas Depth Chart Empty Re: Texas Depth Chart

Post by Ty Webb Sat Jul 23, 2011 5:49 am

Here are some roster changes and some various thoughts/tidbits. With the new coaching staff, there are many question marks all around the board. Many spots on the depth chart may not be decided until August.

As usual, there are a lot of double jerseys.

QB
7 Garrett Gilbert
6 Case McCoy (listed at 200 lbs.)
18 Connor Wood (switch to #5)
10 David Ash (switch to #14; listed at 6-3 215)

There is a lot of speculation that Connor Wood may transfer soon to get a better chance to play.

Ash is the guy for the future (especially if Wood leaves). He has "it" and is a very tough player. Probably redshirts this year, but not other quarterbacks transferring may change that. I'm not sure if Wood punted in high school, but Ash is an excellent punter. I would probably switch their kicking ratings.

HB
31 Cody Johnson (switch to #11; FB)
28 Foswhitt (Fozzy) Whitaker (switch to #2)
23 Tre Newton (retired; change to #25 Jeremy Hills 6-0 202 Jr.-RS or #32 Traylon Shead 6-2 218 Fr.-RS)
24 Malcolm Brown (switch to #28)
26 D.J. Monroe

With Fozzy and Brown getting carries, Cody should be more of a short yardage/goal line back. It'll be interesting to see him at FB as his interest in blocking can be fleeting, but he is a good receiver out of the backfield.

Fozzy's injury rating should probably drop a bit. There's a reason people call him Mr. Glass.

Tre Newton gave up football due to having several concussions. I would replace him with either Jeremy Hills who is a decent back or Traylon Shead who redshirted last year. Shead is an extremely strong player (450 BP, 675 squat) who runs high 4.5s with good quickness and vision. If he doesn't work out at RB, there's a chance he could be tried at LB.

Malcolm Brown has reportedly been doing well in workouts and showed up in great shape. He's a downhill, power runner, who should be aided by a strong interior line. If he's not the feature back midway through the season, he'll at least have a big role in the offense.

Monroe will actually have a role on the team this year. Harsin and Applewhite love him and have plans to put him all over the field. He has elite speed and is an excellent kick returner. A true home run threat.

FB
21 Chris Whaley (switch to #96, RE)
30 Ryan Roberson

Whaley is playing DE and appears to be working out much better there than at RB. Roberson is a converted LB (where he played well) who played well at FB last year. He is a solid lead blocker and a dependable receiver. Won't run the ball much unless it's a short yardage situation.

Incoming freshman Joe Bergeron (#24 6-1 220) is a physical specimen with a strong work ethic. He is the most natural fullback on the team and has great hands. I think he might be the most under appreciated member of this recruiting class. May play more of an H-Back role at first.

WR
1 Mike Davis
84 Marquise Goodwin (redshirting this season to focus on track)
9 Malcolm Williams
3 DeSean Hales
4 Darius White (Soph. No RS)
81 Jaxon Shipley (switch to #8; listed at 6-1 183)
86 I'm not sure who this is, but think it's Chris Jones #17 6-0 160 Fr.-RS
83 Miles Onyegbule (switch to #81)

Right now, the starters are expected to be Davis, John Harris (#13 6-3 206 Fr.-RS), and Hales as the slot. A lot can change before the season.

With the player that I think is Chris Jones, I'm inclined to just change him to John Harris, as there are so many young WRs already. Harris came on in the spring and looks to be a reliable and consistent option at SE. Hales also had a big spring and should be utilized more in the new offense.

Darius White has been improving greatly after last season. He's faster than the game lists him. He is a legit 4.5 guy and a very good kick returner.

Malcolm Williams is a physical run blocker who gives maximum effort. He may line up at TE/H-Back some this season.

Shipley has reportedly been the most impressive freshman this summer and can play outside or in the slot. His game is similar to his brother Jordan's, excellent routes, solid hands, very good kick returner, and good at finding space. He doesn't have the elite speed his brother had before he tore up his knee, but he's fast enough mid 4.5ish.

Miles O will probably redshirt. He has a big frame and may be a TE longterm. He played QB in high school and has a cannon for an arm. Not a great route runner yet. Has good hands and knows how to use his size. Will go into traffic and fight for the ball. Not much of a deep threat.

TE
87 Dominique Jones
18 D.J. Grant (Created player; 6-3 230 Jr.-RS dark skin)
89 Barrett Matthews
82 M.J. McFarland (switch to #88; listed at 6-6 245)

TE/H-Back should be an interesting position to follow based on the way Harsin utilized them at Boise. A lot of potential there, but since Jermichael Finley, it's been a snakebit group.

Jones is better at blocking than receiving, but is serviceable in the latter. He has missed a lot of work outs this summer, so there is some speculation he may be leaving, but there is nothing definitive yet.

Matthews is also a good blocker, who had trouble catching the ball last year. More of an H-Back.

McFarland played more as a WR in high school, so he has a ways to go, but he has a good frame and good hands. Could redshirt

D.J. Grant has yet to play at Texas due to a knee injury from spring ball in 2009. Despite the injury he still has the speed to stretch the field and is a willing blocker. Expected to be the number two behind Jones to start, but should get a lot of reps.

Blaine Irby (#19 6-3 237 Sr.-RS) was on his way to being the next David Thomas before a gruesome knee injury in 2008. The fact that he is expected to be able to play is amazing. He may contribute, but it's hard to predict how he'll perform.

LT
56 Tray Allen (Created; 6-4 310 Sr.-RS dark skin)
70 Paden Kelly (switch to RT; Soph. no RS; listed at 305)
75 Garrett Greenlea (switch to #76; RT)

LG
76 Trey Hopkins (switch to #75)
79 Thomas Ashcraft

C
78 David Snow
73 Garrett Porter
55 Dominic Espinosa (Fr.-RS)

RG
67 Mason Walters (switch to #72)
54 Mark Buchanan
62 Sedrick Flowers (switch to #66)

RT
77 Luke Poehlmann (switch to LT; listed at 285)
71 Josh Cochran (switch to #68; LT)

The interior line should be solid, but the tackles may be questionable. There is very little depth, especially at tackle. If either tackle gets hurt, Hopkins likely slides out to replace them

Allen probably projects to start at LT right now. More of a natural fit at G, but Hopkins fits that role better in the new offense and someone needs to play tackle. If it doesn't work, they could switch positions. Allen missed last season with a foot injury that is still lingering.

If Hopkins is forced to kick out to T, Flowers could play a lot at G. He has great feet and is very athletic for his size with good lateral movement. Very strong, with a great initial punch. Might be able to play center down the line.

Greenlea tore his ACL last season and could redshirt this year while rehabbing. Down the line, he may wind up at guard.

Buchanan will probably back up as both a guard and tackle, due to lack of depth.

Poehlmann is coming off an ACL tear and has always struggled to maintain/build up mass. He may only be about 275 and not be able to get much bigger.

Espinosa looks like the number two center and Porter will probably be a reserve guard.

LE
92 Reggie Wilson
88 Greg Daniels (switch to #95, DT; Fr.-RS; listed at 270)
51 Cedric Reed (switch to #88)

RE
44 Jackson Jeffcoat (listed at 253)
95 Tevin Mims (transferred; change to LOLB #11 Tevin Jackson 6-2 230 Fr.)
50 Michael Cruciani (walkon who probably won't play except at DS; change to FB Joe Bergeron #24 6-1 220 dark skin)

Jeffcoat will start at the buck, with Dravanti Johnson backing him up. Johnson plays a little OLB, but is more of an end. Chris Whaley is obviously raw at DE, but showed promise in the spring.

Okafor should start at the other end, with Wilson behind him. Okafor has been moved from DE to DT, but is a better fit at DE.

Cedric Reed is a good athlete for his size. He projects growing to at least 270-280 and may eventually end up at DT. He needs to use his hands better, but has a good first step and gets great pressure. Due to him showing up in great shape and the lack of depth at DE, there's a good chance that he plays this fall.

DT
91 Kheeston Randall
80 Alex Okafor (switch to LE)
96 Calvin Howell (switch to #90)
85 Ashton Dorsey
94 Taylor Bible (change to LT #56 Tray Allen 6-4 310 Sr.-RS)
97 Quincy Russell (failed to qualify; change to DT #99 Desmond Jackson 6-1 280)

Randall is the only sure thing in this group. Dorsey probably has the best chance of starting opposite Randall, with Howell and Greg Daniels playing behind them. Daniels has a lot of upside and keeps growing (in a good way). Bible has been a major disappointment constantly being overweight and hurt.

Quincy Russell didn't make it to campus, but Desmond Jackson did and he is better than Russell. He needs to put on some weight for the longterm, but is a disruptive pass rusher and will probably play on third downs, assuming he doesn't redshirt.

LOLB
9 Dravannti Johnson (switch to LE; listed at 235)
5 Aaron Benson (Fr.-RS)
53 Steve Edmond (switch to #33, MLB; listed at 235)

MLB
18 Emmanuel Acho
56 Kendall Thompson (switch to #35, LOLB)
13 Tariq Allen (Transferred; change to Chet Moss 6-2 235 Fr. light skin)

ROLB
1 Keenan Robinson
33 Jordan Hicks (switch to #3)
15 Demarco Cobbs (listed at 210)

Acho, Hicks, and Robinson will all definitely start, the only question is at which spot.

Acho will probably play mike despite not being a true MLB. Freshmen Steve Edmond and Chet Moss are the only true inside backers.

Edmond is a beast who may need a few games before he gets going, but if he plays this year, he may be starting by the end of the season. He has great instincts, good ball skills, and is a natural striker. True downhill player that can get off blocks well. He is much bigger than his listed 235 and may be a DE longterm if keeps getting bigger. Moss was an early enrollee and had a solid spring. He'll most likely play this fall, but may not get significant snaps. Limited lateral movement. May be a FB longterm.

Robinson will probably start at sam, with Benson and Kendall Thompson behind him. Thompson is good in space, has terrific ball skills, and is pretty fluid in his drops. There's longterm potential for him at DE. Before Muschamp left, he was being recruited as a buck end.

Tevin Jackson sat out last year due to clearinghouse issues. He is now enrolled as a true freshman. He is an excellent edge rusher who can play with his hand on the ground. Not as good at pass coverage.

CB
2 Carrington Byndom (switch to #23)
7 A.J. White
32 Josh Turner (switch to #25)
29 Quandre Diggs (switch to #28)
36 Sheroid Evans (switch to #29; FS)
25 Eryon Barnett (switch to #4; hurt: out for season)

Byndom and Adrian Phillips are expected to start at corner with White, Diggs, and Turner competing.

Turner is a solid technically sound corner. Diggs is Quentin Jammer's half-brother and is a great athlete that could probably be an ever better RB, but he wants to hit people. I think he's like a defensive version of Quan Cosby with so many intangibles and leadership qualities. Both Turner and Diggs will be pushing for playing time.

Sheroid Evans is most likely a safety, but may eventually get a look at corner. Good chance he redshirts this year so that his injured hamstring can fully heal. He has elite speed (10.34 100m in 2010, 21.37 200m) and is one of the top sprinters in the country.

Barnett tore his ACL this summer and will miss the season. He has injured this knee before and was a transfer candidate before the injury, so I'd change him to #26 Mykkele Thompson 6-3 182 Fr.

Thompson is a tremendous athlete who has been focusing at CB this summer. He would make a great wildcat QB and has a good arm. He's a leaper (25+' long jump) and very fluid. He has some wiggle and good enough speed (4.5 40, 10.5 100m) but looks slower as he is a long strider.

FS
21 Blake Gideon
17 Adrian Phillips (move to CB)
27 Bryant Jackson (move to SS)

SS
6 Christian Scott
16 Kenny Vaccaro (switch to #8; listed at 214)

Vaccaro will be the starter at strong and is expected to be a difference maker. He will probably slide to nickel in such situations, unless Diggs really steps up there.

Bryant Jackson started the spring at CB, but moved to SS. He has good ball skills and is a willing tackler. If he steps up, there is a chance that in nickel, Vaccaro will play NB, Gideon will slide to SS, and Jackson will play free.

PK
14 Will Russ (Fr.-RS)

P
19 Justin Tucker

Tucker is clutch and Russ has a very strong leg but has had accuracy issues. I would probably switch their positions, as Tucker will definitely kick and Russ will most likely perform traditional punts, as Tucker is more of a rugby punter. There's a good chance that Russ will also do kickoffs.

As far as kick returners, D.J. Monroe, Darius White, Malcolm Williams, Quandre Diggs, and Mike Davis are all likely contenders. Personally, I think it should be Monroe and Diggs.

Potential punt returners are Adrian Phillips, Diggs, Darius White, and Shipley. Phillips will probably start the season as the returner, but I think that Shipley will be the guy by the end of the year.

Texas Depth Chart Empty Re: Texas Depth Chart

Post by Ty Webb Mon Aug 08, 2011 7:03 am

Here are a few updates from my previous post based on the end of 7 on 7's and the first few practices.

Looks like Connor Wood is going to stick it out this year.

David Ash may be the best punter on the team. If he doesn't redshirt, he may punt this year.

Cody Johnson has been running with the ones at FB.

Chet Moss has been moved to FB. As there are enough FBs on the roster (and good chance he redshirts), I guess I'd just leave him off.

Top WRs right now are Davis, Harris, and White with Shipley next.

As mentioned above, Malcolm Williams will not be on the team this fall.

Shipley has been continuing his impressive work from 7 on 7's and has been making people (primarily Kenny Vaccaro) look foolish from the slot. He was also been getting some reps at PR.

With the loss of so many WRs, SS Bryant Jackson has been practicing there.

TE Dominique Jones might not be eligible this fall. Should know fairly soon.

D.J. Grant and Blaine Irby have been the leaders at the position, with Irby slightly in front.

They've been trying Mason Walters at RT. The OL will be shaken up a bit over the next month and maybe during the season as well.

Garrett Greenlea has mono and that may force a redshirt. Apparently his knee is healed enough that he can play this season if necessary.

Expect a lot of people to play on defense. Manny Diaz has said that wants to play 22 players by the end of the first quarter.

Desmond Jackson has put on good weight (probably up to 290-295) and has drawn favorable comparisons as a quicker Roy Miller. If he plays like he's been practicing, he'll quickly find his way into the two deep.

Even though he's listed at 270, I'd say Greg Daniels is also up in the 290-295 range (in a good way).

Kendall Thompson will not be moved to DE anytime soon. They like him at LB.

Tevin Jackson has been a pleasant surprise. Showed up in great shape and hasn't lost his game. Diaz thinks he may be able to play MLB.

Tariq Allen has been dressed out at practice, though he hasn't participated yet. In the spring, the SID announced his plans to transfer. I'm not sure if he is still on scholarship or not. He is not currently listed on the roster.

After his impressive showing in the THSCA All-Star game, Bryan Harsin has expressed interest in Mykkele Thompson getting reps on offense. He has looked like a natural at corner, but is a playmaker with an extra gear. I wouldn't be surprised to see him play on either side.

Sheroid Evans hamstring is healed and he hasn't shown any trouble running. They've been trying him at corner (as everyone starts there) but I still say he ends up at FS. His speed is needed there badly.

I'm not sure if Will Russ has been struggling, but I have heard not be surprised if Tucker handles all three kicking duties this year.

Two players I didn't mention above that have good chances to play this year:

TE Darius Terrell (6-3 238 #15 Fr.-RS) was a big possession WR recruited as a flex TE with the potential to play with his hand on the ground. He has very good hands and has filled out his frame nicely, but still struggles with blocking.

CB Leroy Scott (5-10 1987 #31 Fr.) was a four year starter in high school who has good hips and burst/recovery who is adept both in man and zone coverage. Probably plays this year, although it may primarily be on special teams.

Sounds like Hills is coming on and should get some snaps.

I believe Joe Bergeron is in the game, if he's not he has to be added. Dude is going to play a ton.

Top 4 WRs are Mike Davis, Jaxon Shipley, Darius White, John Harris. True FR Miles Oyengbule is impressed some but still raw.

Top 3 TEs are DJ Grant, Blaine Irby, and Darius Terrell.

Should be a lot more news after tonight's scrimmage. Hopefully we see some QB separation as well as some developments at OL/2nd DT spot.

Texas Depth Chart Empty Re: Texas Depth Chart

Post by Ty Webb Tue Aug 16, 2011 2:25 am

This is based off of two practices I attended last week as well as reports from the first team scrimmage on Saturday.

None of the QBs have stepped up and truly taken over. Gilbert has been struggling and Wood is still having problems hitting receivers. McCoy and Ash have been looking the best so far. They're starting to give Ash more reps against the 1s and upping the pressure to see how he handles it.

Several RBs have looked good and the scheme should allow for each to have their own role. Fozzy is still the number one for now. Bergeon has been at RB, not FB. Good straightline speed, but little to no wiggle. He is a battering ram and should play a lot this year. He is running #2, with Jeremy Hills and Shead battling for 3. Monroe will also be a serious threat every time he touches the ball. Malcolm Brown has a nagging hamstring injury that has limited him thus far.

Chet Moss's move to FB is working out. He looked good and was making some big blocks, with little regard for his own body. Looks to be the number two FB behind Cody Johnson.

Davis and Shipley are the top two receivers. Both are slot guys who can play outside. Shipley is still struggling a bit when jammed on the line, but always gets open against zone. Harris has played very well and excels at the little things (blocking, route running). Darius White is physically similar to Harris, but a better athlete. He's still a little raw, rounds off his routes, and has occasional drops, but has shown improvement and blocks well also. Miles O has been impressing with his toughness, especially over the middle.

At TE, Irby looks the best all around and Grant is the best receiver. Darius Terrell has looked good, but is still behind both of them. No word yet on whether Dominique Jones will be eligible.

Starting OL from left to right was Tray Allen-Hopkins-Espinosa-Snow-Walters, both at the practices I attended and the scrimmage Saturday night. Espinosa looks good enough at center to keep Snow at guard.

Okafor and Jeffcoat are locked in as starters, with Okafor having a great camp. Whaley has been very impressive in his transition to DE.

The one-tech DT spot is still a battle between Dorsey and Howell with Desmond Jackson pushing. On pass plays, where Jackson pins his ears back he gets great pressure, but still struggles against the run. Daniels is backing up Randall.

Keenan Robinson will probably play inside, with Acho moving to OLB. Cobbs is the fourth LB and is the fastest too. Steve Edmond looks to be the most impressive freshman. He is strong at the point of attack and made at least two hits on RBs that made the crowd wince. Despite being the only true MLB on the team he will likely run #2 behind Robinson. Tariq Allen is back on the team, but as a walkon. Not sure if he's expected to play at all.

Looks like Byndom has one CB spot locked down. I think Diggs will get the other and Phillips will be the nickel. He has also been working at safety. Josh Turner and A.J. White are fighting it out for the next CB spots, with Turner probably having the edge right now.

When Vaccaro has been playing, he's been at FS with Gideon at SS. Mykkele Thompson has been playing both safety positions. Christian Scott's arrest bumps him down the depth chart as he has been suspended from team activities.

Monroe and Diggs look to be the Kick returners for now. Diggs is a fierce blocker and I think this will work out. Darius White is probably the next guy.

Punt returner looks like Shipley and then Darius White.
