Virginia Tech picks up UGA offensive lineman

Just over two weeks after deciding to leave Georgia, and following a visit to Virginia Tech this past weekend, Brent Benedict has decided to leave the SEC for the ACC.

In an interview with the Florida Times-Union, the offensive lineman confirmed that he has decided to transfer to the Hokies. Benedict, who will have to sit out the 2011 season to satisfy NCAA transfer rules, told the paper that a big part of his decision is due to the fact that Tech will be losing four lineman to expired eligibility at the end of this year, as was his familiarity with the school coming out of high school.

Hokies reinstate kicker

after kicker Cody Journell had reached a plea agreement that wrapped up his “legal situation,” a reinstatement to the Virginia Tech football team would likely be in the offing.

Friday, that’s exactly what went down as the Hokies announced in a press release that Journell is back on the team after he was reinstated. The move comes almost exactly seven months after Journell was suspended indefinitely by the school.

Having already lost one of its two recruited freshman running backs to academic issues, West Virginia now has lost the other.

Torry Clayton has left the team, the school announced Saturday night, saying his departure was "voluntary.''

Virginia Tech senior WR D.J. Coles will likely miss the rest of the season with a right knee injury.

He was injured in Monday night's win over Georgia Tech. Coles, a fifth-year senior, would be eligible to pursue a medical redshirt because he played in less than 30 percent of Virginia Tech’s games this year. He only returned to practice two weeks ago after recovering from offseason PCL surgery in the same knee. Coles registered 36 catches for 480 yards and three touchdowns in 2011.

Exum out for 2013, a LB indefinitely suspended

the school announced star cornerback Antone Exum had suffered a torn ACL — reportedly during a pickup basketball game — and could miss up to nine months. Today, another off-field issue that’s hit the Hokies has come to light.

According to the Roanoke Times, redshirt freshman linebacker Dahman McKinnon was indefinitely suspended late last year after he was charged with, among other things, fleeing the scene of an accident. As the Times explains, the fact that the damage involved was in excess of $1,000 triggered a felony charge under Virginia state law
