Maryland loses two to academics

Maryland dismisses starting offensive lineman
First-year head coach Randy Edsall announced in a press release Tuesday that guard Justin Lewis has been dismissed from the football program. The reason for the dismissal is, of course, an unspecified violation of team rules.

Maryland has just released their post-spring football depth chart, and there are quite a bit of changes. Let’s get started.

The starting O-Line remains Max Garcia, Andrew Gonnella, Bennett Fulper, Josh Cary and R.J. Dill while Justin Gilbert and Justin Lewis recover from injury. Don’t be surprised if Cary remains the starter even after Lewis recovers, however. (Lewis recently removed from the team though)

At wideout, Kevin Dorsey and Quintin McRee still are starting on the outside, while Kerry Boykins and Ronnie Tyler are in a battle for the slot. There is a battle between Devin Burns and Adrian Coxson for the backup spot to Dorsey. (Coxson is a speedy transfer from Florida and Burns moved from QB to WR)

Davin Meggett has the starting tailback slot outright over D.J. Adams. After the departure of Gary Douglas, walk-on defensive backs Kwabena Ofori and Desmond Haynes have both been moved to tailback.

With Taylor Watson and Haroon Brown both leaving the program, redshirt freshman Rahsaan Moore is the starting fullback. Transfer Jeff Hernandez is his back-up.

As expected, Troy Jones is the third-string quarterback.

The starting defensive line is Clarence Murphy, Joe Vellano, Andre Monroe, and David Mackall. Murphy took the defensive end position from Isaiah Ross, who is now Mackall’s primary backup at ROCK. A.J. Francis, a two-year starter, is Vellano’s primary backup at defensive tackle. Justin Anderson, a former starter as well, is Monroe’s primary backup.

Lorne Goree has moved from Will to Mike, making him Demetrius Hartsfield’s backup. Behind Darin Drakeford at Will are Lamonte Gaddis and Shaquan Virgil.

Dexter McDougle has won one of the starting corner spots, over Trenton Hughes. Hughes now becomes the main backup to Cameron Chism.

Maryland picks up a transfer WR (yes, received a transfer, not someone transferring out)

the arrival of former New Mexico wideout Daniel Adams. According to the Washington Times, Adams is already enrolled in classes at Maryland, but to satisfy transfer rules, he will be sitting out the 2012 season. Additionally, Adams suffered a foot injury in an offseason workout and will likely miss two or three months recovering.

Maryland picks up another transfer, this time former VTech QB

The Terps picked up another athlete this week with the addition of quarterback Ricardo Young. The school announced the addition in a statement.

Maryland quarterback C.J. Brown will be out for the year with a ACL tear.

Maryland names starting QB

The loss of quarterback C.J. Brown to a season-ending ACL injury did two things for Maryland. For one, it further dampened the Terps’ 2012 outlook; now it’s put more pressure on true freshman Perry Hills.

Via his Twitter account, Maryland coach Randy Edsall announced, as expected, that Hills would be the starting quarterback for Week 1 against William & Mary. Caleb Rowe will be the team’s backup and Devin Burns will serve as the third-string quarterback.

Maryland loses DE to injury
Second-year coach Randy Edsall will have to deal with significant injuries on the defensive side of the ball too, starting with defensive end Andre Monroe. Monroe, who started four games last year and was expected to start this season, will miss the season with a knee injury that will require surgery

Two players transfer

The Terps confirmed Monday that running back Justus Pickett and defensive back Makinton Dorleant have left the football program.

Maryland sophomore RB Justus Pickett has been granted his release from the program and will transfer to a different school.

Pickett cited family reasons for his decision to leave the Terrapins. The sophomore has been merely a backup the last two seasons but accumulated 416 yards and four touchdowns on 143 carries in that time.

Maryland QB transfers

Per a university athletic official, quarterback Devin Burns will transfer from the program. Where Burns will go has not yet been made official. He finished the season with just four passing attempts for 47 yards and 70 yards rushing.

Maryland DL suspended for 2013

Maryland announced Friday evening that defensive lineman Isaiah Ross has indeed been suspended for one year for violating university policy. What that policy is specifically was not divulged by the school
